Here's what people had to say about...

"I think that I shall never see the right kind of suburban tree"

When I was in the nursery business (County Line Nursery), I tried to tell my clients the very thing you wrote in your article.

For a screen planting I always planted conifers (White Pine, Douglas Fir and Spruce trees) 20' apart.

Trees to shade the house a minimum of 30' from the house, otherwise 50' apart, preferably Oak trees.  I found 4 Oak trees, suitable for planting on small properties:

bulletQuercus "Crimschmidt," Crimson Spire Oak, Height 45', Spread 15'.
bulletQuercus "Asjes," Rose Hill Oak, Height 40', Spread 20'.
bulletQuercus "Pyramich," Skymaster Oak, Height 50', Spread 25'.
bulletQuercus frainetto "Schmidt," Forest Green Oak, Height 50', Spread 30'.

Oaks are my favored trees, there is no need to plant any other tree for shade.

The public needs to be educated.  Builders and developers should stay away from landscaping their new homes.  I found out that a new homeowner will remove all plant material planted by builders and start over again.  Articles like yours published in the daily paper are leading in the right direction.

Looking forward to reading more of your articles.

I am sincerely yours

Herbert B.
